Little French Hols

Petites Vacances françaises.

Cathal, his Mammy, and his Nan went to France on a little break recently, for a family event. It was not the first time Cathal was flying (in fact, the 3rd time in 11 months) but this time he really appreciated the experience.

The flight out took off at 6.30 in the morning, so it was an early start. This did not stop him from having his priorities right. As soon as sat down on the plane he asked for:

Biscuit!

Hummm. Nice breakfast! Could have this every morning Mammy!
Yammmm.

Between eating rice cakes (“more biscuits!”), reading his books – more exactly Nan and then Mammy reading the books and Cathal signing all the animals and body parts – and colouring, he never knew we took off, crossed the sea, and then landed. Good As Gold!

Super sage !

And when we got on the plane again to come back, his little face lit up with pure delight as soon as he was in his seat, then he asked for biscuits, and then his books… This is what is called a seasoned traveller.

Once in France, he met up again with his Super-Grand-Parents (Nan’s parents), his Super-Aunt (Nan’s sister), his Super-Uncle and the Mammy’s 3 little cousins, aged between 10 and almost 3. And you know what? After barely two hours, it was as if he had been re-united with his long lost brothers. It was just lovely.

What I found particularly touching is the way the other children who were present at the family event (all boys on this occasion) welcomed him and included him. Especially that they are not all blood-related to him. They all went over to him, talked to him, played with him. And when one of the Mammy’s little cousins starting explaining that Cathal signs, and attempted to demonstrated what he had learnt in the last 2 days, they all tried as well, signing “hello” (or I should say “bonjour”) and “Cathal”. One of the younger ones, 3 years old himself, totally took him under his wing: he did not stop hugging him, and kissing him, and bringing all kind of toys and games to him all afternoon. One of the older boy asked me at one stage: “How old is he?” – “Two.” – “Does he walk?” – “Not yet.” – “Oh. Ok.” And he then went over to a part of the garden where a neighbour’s cat had wondered in to check what all the noise was about and was surrounded by all the other children, picked up the animal and brought it over to Cathal to show him.

Children can make things so simple, can be so accepting and inclusive. It is we, as adults, who complicate things, and try to push, pull, impose, and justify. Nice to be reminded of this every so often

So what did Cathal think of France? I am not sure, but his Super-Aunt’s sofa was found to be quite comfortable, thank you very much!

And I can’t resist these 2 other photos, they are too cool, and show we had great fun!

We are family!

En famille.

So we were all near Paris last weekend, that is Cathal, his Mammy, the Dad, his uncle, and myself. A big family do with LOTS of people. The first time in years that every member of my dad’s family (aka: Super-Grand-dad) was under the same roof. We realised afterwards that they were in fact 5 generations together, as one on my dad’s aunt was there too!

It was also the first time Cathal could travel and meet with his frenchie fan-base. And what a welcome they gave him! In the few days leading up to this weekend I was both excited and apprehensive. I guess that deep down I was been sort of worried about the level of acceptance into the family of a “different” person. You see, as a family, Cathal is our first experience of Special Needs, so it’s unexplored territory.

I needn’t have worried. Everyone welcomed him like any other new member of the tribe, like any of the three other babies who were there on the night. They also demonstrated a generosity towards him that moved me deeply. The fear of the unknown often poisons a positive view of life, isn’t it? And I am learning that fear of rejection, because of a “difference”, is the worst of all.

This welcome and acceptance shouldn’t have surprised me, their support throughout his surgery adventure was well demonstrated via emails exchanges. Yet it was nice to witness it face to face, or “live” as someone put it.

This weekend was also the opportunity for Cathal to catch up with his Mammy’s only first cousins who are now aged 9 ½, 6 ½ and 2 (last Monday!). They had not seen him since he was a tiny baby, awaiting his first surgery in Crumlin Hospital last year.

Here are some photos – I had to be selective, so many have been forwarded to me!

Bubbles, bubbles everywhere…

Des bulles, des bulles partout…

Cathal is recovering, very very slowly but very very surely. His parents keep a vigil by his side in ICU, and I keep a vigil by the phone. It’s been a long few days, but all the messages we have received have been so heart-warming, and of great help.

It is amazing to think that people around the world, who have never met him andonly know about him through the medium of the internet, have been thinking of him so much.

In particular I want to mention the French side of the family, who have been so supportive. All the Super-grand uncles and aunts, all the 3rd and 4th cousins (is that what they are? I get mixed up!) who have not met him yet, and have emailed me so much in the last few days. Some party we will have when they finally get to see him!

So, as a thank you all, here is a video clip of the Little Prince himself.

Last Saturday, a week ago, the day before Cathal went into hospital, we had a quiet little celebration: early birthday presents, cake and singing. And a fun game with bubbles!

The Mammy blew the bubbles with a special little gun, the Dad took photos (warming: flash photography on the clip!), Unkie Ro spoke in a funny voice about Cathal’s first tooth, and Nan shot the whole scene.

Great Aunt

Cathal has lots of great aunts. He has also one Great Aunt from France who is visiting him these days.

She is my only sibling, my own little sister, closer in age to Cathal’s Mammy than to me, and – to make things more confusing – her third child is only 8 ½ months older than Cathal… And these things are supposed to happen only in large Irish families???

So here she is shortly after she arrived (without any of her men – 1 big, 3 little) on Friday. She even got to visit Cathal’s school…! As you can see, it’s great fun!
